Firstly, thank you for the emails wondering where I’ve been. February a year ago I was diagnosed with multiple embolisms in both lungs. By the time I was diagnosed the emergency room staff told me I was a walking miracle. By all counts I should have been on a ventilator with only a miracle to save my life.
My family does not have a history of blood clots. I had not recently had surgery. I had not been on any long trips, air travel.
The only cause I could come up with is the Mirena IUD. The doctors say there are no indications on file anywhere that the Mirena IUD causes blood clots or that a woman using it should watch for embolisms.
I would love to hear from others regarding their experience with the Mirena IUD. On the web I have seen only a couple of stories of women experiencing same, but none of us can prove it is the Mirena IUD.
I would also like to hear from anyone who has used the Mirena IUD and had issues with pregnancies immediately after discontinuing its use.
All the best and thank you for your support, those of you who knew what I was going through.

I first would like to say Im sorry to hear about your situation. I am in the same boat with the mirena,I had it fine for about 2 yrs then BAM…I had a seizure. My family has absolutely no history of seizures AT ALL!!!!. the doctors say that they never heard of the mirena causing seizures but i did my own research and found a case where a family planning place and a doctor got sued. and that seizures can be caused from hormones being “messed up”. Now how I can prove that I dont know? I need to fing out!!! I need major help!!!

Hi, I am Mary (from the Netherlands) and I just had a seizure a week ago. My story is exactly the same. Our family does not have a history of seizures at all. I got the Mirena inserted in the beginning of March 2012. I had no complaints at all, up to last week. My husband found my unconscious in our bed. He could not wake me and this lasted for about fifteen minutes. In the meanwhile he phoned a doctor and an ambulance. I can´t remember anything that happened. After two days in the hospital I could return home. Right now everything is okay, because I take medication for epilepsy. Coming thursday the Mirena will be removed at the doctors office. I am glad it will be removed, but I am also still totally disorientated because of everything that happened. This has a huge impact on our lives, because we have two small children (the youngest being five months old). Please forgive my bad english. I see that your message dates from august 2011. What happened in the meanwhile?
Kind regards,
Mary Welter

Oh wow. My story is so very similar to yours and I am sad to read this. I am wondering where to go with this new information. I have had 3 seizures in the last 6 months with no history of family history of seizures and I have had the Mirena since Feb 2008. It will be removed this Friday. I wish to get in contact with people with similar stories, band together, whatever needs to happen to get the word out there that this is a REAL side effect for the Mirena in my opinion.
Best wishes,
Jessica Norris

I had the mirena put in in 2008 and started having seizures during 2012. I had the iud removed October 2012. Haven’t had a seizure since but have been on anti-seizure medication since October as well.

I just had my mirena removed yesterday because I found a blood clot in my leg last week. My friend who is a nurse asked the dr she works with and he said get the iud removed immediately. When I got to the ob gyn yesterday, the nurse said I definetly needed it taken out. But the dr felt different. She said it doesn’t cause side effects like that because it only effects the uterus. I said ok what about all of the skin problems I’ve had. She said well that is a complaint some patients have had, but no blood clots. I have never had a blood clot until now. I had the mirena for 10 months. I really hope things get back to normal! What are you taking for your blood clots? I’m only taking a daily aspirin.

Im so sorry this happened to you. In February 2008 I was at work and felt a bit dizzy. This was very unusual for me so I went in to the doc. I was told I had a PE in one of my lungs. I had no family history and tested negative for about 17 lab tests they ran. I had cat scans and mammograms also that came up with nothing. One month before the blood clot, I had my iud removed. It was making my breasts sore and causing some nausea. I have been looking for women with the same experience for several years. I know for a fact the progesterone in the iud changed my blood etiology. 6 months later 13 days after
stopping the blood thinner I had another pulmonary embolism.
December 25, 2011 at 7:36 pm
So here it is another year and I wanted to let women know what I was up to on this issue. I kept the mirena iud in because the alternative of major blood loss and dealing with missing work or the embarrassment of soiling my clothing in public made keeping the IUD in as having more benefits…..I need to work. I am still on blood thinners. I cannot stop taking them because the next time a blood clot could occur – because I believe the Mirena IUD caused it – I may not get a warning. Marquita, your post has me really thinking hard. I was planning on taking out the IUD permanently as I neared menopause that maybe I could go through menopause and the periods would stop on their own, etc. Now, I wonder if I can do that but will end up still being on blood thinners.

Hi all! Im 23 yrs old..i had Mirena for 3yrs before I started to feel “funny” it started with tingling in my arms.. Next came chest pain that was undiagnosed for 3 months..until two weeks ago a PE was found..like u all stated, I have no history of PEB and the only thing I could think of that may have caused this is the Mirena. I had it taken out about a month ago. There was no problem only that after removal I ddt bleed at all after (no spotting or anything). Doctors claim it’s unlikely but I’m b almost POSITIVE it was that..I’m not over weight, I do not smoke and I, had not had any surgeries or prolonged travel..i had gotten another scan done and was told that the clot was gone..but I’m still upset this has hapened
January 4, 2016 at 12:39 am
What did they do for you when they fiund the PE?
January 4, 2016 at 9:57 pm
Hi Julia,
I was treated with blood thinners and monitored in the hospital for about five days once they could see my INR level going up. I could see my blood coming out normal during blood draws (when I first went in my blood was like sludge).
I am still on warfarin and have chosen to remain so since time has proven that warfarin is maintaining my INR levels to this day.
January 4, 2016 at 10:10 pm
Thank you for responding. How long has it been since youve gotten the Mirena removed? & can you eventually go without the warfin? & do all the negative effects from the mirena evetually go away?
March 1, 2012 at 10:37 pm
A few months after having the Mirena put in I started having leg pain. I wasn’t sure what was causing it thought it was possibly due to my morning runs, maybe pushing myself to hard. 6 weeks following the leg pain my hands went numb and stayed this way all the time. From there everything got worse, along with feeling like crap all the time I started having seizures. By this time my legs felt numb, my hands and arms burned with pain, I could hardly function. I made several appoitments with doctors who never could find anything wrong with me. I was finally sent to a Neurologist who did a MRI of my brain and found several lessions in the white matter. MS was ruled out due to a negative spinal tap, and the Dr. said the lesions appeared more like lesions from several “Mini strokes” rather then ones of MS. Although they had no idea why someone like me would have several mini strokes, considering everything that caused mini strokes I didn’t have or do. (high blood preasure, smoking…ect..)
Although I’m still unsure if the Mirena had anything to do with all of my symptoms, I still find it strange that I was had picture perfect health before the Mirena and then 2 months following having it put in, my health went downhill very quickly. Other then putting me on medication for seizures (no family history either) they still don’t have answers for me. Time will tell though (hopefully) I just had the Mirena removed today…
Please let me know if there is anyone who has had simular symptoms as me after having the Mirena put in, I would greatly appreciate it. 🙂
July 23, 2013 at 9:22 pm
I have had the exact same complications, except my MRIs were clean, but they suspect I also had “mini strokes”. I had two grand mal seizures and the same tingling sensations with burning for years. Prior to Mirena, I was in good health!
July 14, 2015 at 3:42 pm
My case sounds identical to yours except I had no seizures. I went to ER with numbness and tingling. My MRI found white lesions on the brain, but no lesions on my spine. After this event I felt fine, but Dr. was concerned about the lesions and did every test under the sun. He has ruled out MS and is convinced they are “silent strokes.” No clotting disorders, heart issues and perfect blood work. At our last appt he asked if I should consider removing the Mirena. I have had two of them – going on 7 years now. I guess I will consider it now. Any updates on you?
April 30, 2012 at 2:53 am
Hi. My name is Beth. I had the Mirena for exactly 2 1/2 weeks. That’s all it took. I’ve had a seizure disorder for most of my life, and it’s been very controlled since I was 22. I have two kids, and the only seizures I’ve had since discovering Felbatol 18 years ago occured after the birth of each child. That was until last Monday. I didn’t even immediately put it together. At first I thought I’d somehow forgotten my pills (considering my history, that’s unlikely). I just kept getting worse, and out of desperation, I was taking extra Felbatol to ward off the seizures.I reread the Mirena literature. Nothing. My doctor’s office told me the Mirena couldn’t be to blame, but as I kept getting worse and worse and worse, I decided to search the web. That’s when I found claims of seizures in people who DIDN’T have a history. If it could make them have a seizure, well of course it would be like poison to my body. I realized on Friday that they couldn’t make me keep it in. I called Kaiser until I found a doctor to take it out. By 11:30 a.m. it was history. I started to feel less draggy about 36 hours later. Knowing my own body as well as I do, I went to Red Robin and had the burger with the egg and bacon. High fat helps my brain recover quickly. I’m not 100% yet and now I’m once again bleeding like I’ve just given birth, but at least there is no more seizure activity. I don’t know how Mirena works exactly, but something about it is not healthy for people like me. The OBGYNS need to be made aware of this because recommending this could have been the end of me. What if I had been driving when it hit?
May 3, 2012 at 11:32 pm
I believe that the Mirena IUD had something to do with my blood clots and PE during my pregnancy following the removal of the IUD. They couls not find any reason for the clots and I have had 5 children so it didnt make sense. I had a lot of complications with the IUD- made me bleed for 3 months, nausea, headache, cramping etc. but I know that it really messed up my hormones and my body.
May 9, 2012 at 11:44 am
i am 24 years old and i have had my iud for 3 years now…i have been having pain in my left leg and went to the er and come to find out i have a small blood clot in my leg….so should i go and take the iud out?
June 4, 2012 at 11:59 am
I had the mirena put in in april due to heavy and constant periods. I stopped bleeding the next day but started my period again 4 days later and didnt stop for over a month. Now i have constant pain in my left calf with swelling and bruising. I went to the ER last night and the doctor told me it was probably a pulled muscle but i have injured it. I am scheduled for a doppler today to check it. I’m definitely worried its a clot due to the mirena. Because the iud didnt stop my bleeding I’m now scheduled for a hysterectomy this month. Glad i found this wensite.
July 10, 2012 at 11:32 am
I had the Mirena for only 4 months but it was horrible and my body did not like it at all. After I had it removed, I became pregnant and I ended up with PE. I had one large and several smaller blood clots in my lungs by 11 weeks of pregnancy. The Drs said I was a miracle- they couldn’t believe I lived through it and could not find one reason for the clots. They ended up saying it must be pregnancy but this was my 7th pregnancy, 5th baby and never a blood clot. I was always wondering about the truth of the blood clots caused from the mirena……
September 4, 2012 at 4:02 pm
I had the Mirena put in a few months ago and within a few days notices major anxiets and mood swings and also shortness of breath. I have had panic attacks in the past and just figured the breathing difficulties were from that. I had talked to both my GP and OB about it and decided to have it removed after a little over a month. Not even two weeks after it was removed I went back in to see my GP because it felt like I couldn’t breath, was getting dizzy spells, loss of balance and tingling in my fingers. He sceduled a CAT scan for me for five days after I saw him. The CAT scan revealed a clot in my lungs and now have to take blood thinners for a few months and have been told I can no longer be on any hormone containing birth control. As a side note, I’m not a smoke, not obese and pretty active so the conclusion was that the clot happened because of the Mirena.
November 2, 2012 at 7:58 pm
I too can not be on any kind of hormones due to the high risk of blood clots. I had a massive blood clot in my brain that caused me to have a stroke. I also now have epilepsy. I first felt tingling in my feet in the mornings especially when I stood up kind of like needles being poked into my feet.
September 25, 2012 at 10:17 am
I’ve been on mirana for less then a year and all of a sudden I started having seizures. My first was in June 2012 and I’ve had 3 more since then. Two being Grand Mal seizures. My Doctor is at a loss as to why and so is the Neurologist I started seeing. It didn’t dawn on me till yesterday that the mirana could be the issue. It’s also the only thing I failed to tell my doctor I had. I guess since I’m not taking a pill every day as birth control, it totally slipped my mind.

Hello Stacy,
Here is a reply from the Netherlands. I am Dutch. I also had a seizure six months ago. I went from being healty to a person that takes medicin for epilepsy. I am not allowed to drive for six months (luckely that time is almost over). I had the Mirena only six weeks and than i had the seizure. Our second child was only four months old. It was a horrible time. But the thing is, I cannot prove it was the Mirena. Dutch doctors rule it out immediately. I wish you the best and I hope doctors in your country are different.
Good luck Mary
November 2, 2012 at 8:02 pm
I had the mirena in for 10 months and got pregnant right after the removal. While pregnant I had a massive blood clot in my brain that burst and almost died. I now also have epilesy and have to take medicine. I wish you all the best!

Has anyone had any relief from seizures with the Mirena out??? Anyone’s doc diagnose them with pseudo seizures? Anyone have long term memory loss??
September 30, 2012 at 5:49 pm
I am pregnant with my 9th child and this is my 11th pregnancy. I lost 2 pregnancies after ending my birth control. I got an iud put in after my 5th pregnancy. I had it about a year. I had it removed due to pain it caused during intercourse. Shortly after I got pregnant. After the birth I got a small clot in my leg around my ankle. Docs said no big. Got pregnant with 7th child and developed a large clot high in my thigh shortly after the birth. Got pregnant with the 8th child and developed clots in lower leg during the 1st trimester. I used aspirin after delivery and had no clots. My 9th pregnancy a developed clots high in the thigh and around knee and in lower leg all during the 1st trimester. Now I am on blood thinners for the entire pregnancy and 6 wks after. My husband and I were discussing what to do after delivery since the doc says I will have to be on thinners with each preg. He mentioned mirena. That got me thinking, I have never had any problems til after the mirena use. Please don’t use this product.
November 2, 2012 at 7:49 pm
I had the mirena in for 10 months and had constant bleeding and spotting so I finally had it removed. I got pregnant 3 days after it was removed. When I was about 27 weeks pregnant I had an aneurism in my brain burst and the neurosurgeon said he rmoved a clot the size of his fist. He also said it is a miracle I am alive and my survival is beyond his medical understanding. I was looking online because I was wondering if anyone else had experienced side effects. I found out after the brain surgery (during this near death experience I had a stroke by the way) that I have a blood disease that can put me at risk for possible blood clotting. I have a healthy 1 1/2 year old but between using the patch a while then te iud I just wonder if it had neg. side effects that nearly cost me my life
November 2, 2012 at 7:51 pm
I would like to add that during my pregnancy I noticed that when I woke up and I stood up it felt like needles were being poked into my feet and took a few minutes for it to go away. It was a painful feeling but my doctor didn’t think anything of it.
November 2, 2012 at 7:59 pm
I have read some other comments and I think it’s important to note that about 6 months after all of this happened I started having seizures and now have epilepsy.

I had put my mirena iud in 2005, had it taken out at 2:00 pm on June 14th 2010, when the 5 yrs was up, no history of seizures… At 2am I woke up having grand mal seizures, I remember nothing. I was in ICU for almost a month, lucky to be alive but I could go on and on about my memory loss and the amount of meds I take day and I still have seizures, I’ve had test treatments and I was perfectly healthy. I’m 40 now so all this was at 37… I have 2 little boys, 8 and 10 and am married to a great man. I have Epilepsy now and know its from the iud just can’t prove it.. So how do we get together and do this…

I know this is an older post, but I feel the need to comment, anyway.
I kind of felt a bit “off” the whole time I had a mirena IUD, about one year. After its removal, I had one period, and immediately became pregnant. I lost the pregnancy at five weeks. In my very next pregnancy, I had an issue where the placenta was slightly detached from the uterine wall, resulting in some bleeding. The literature says that mirena is completely safe and reversible, but I have difficulty believing that the device had no impact on my miscarriage and following pregnancy.
I’ve also heard of people conceiving with the IUD in situ, and a very close friend of mine also lost a baby after becoming pregnant immediately after removing her mirena IUD. I will never, ever use this product again.
June 24, 2013 at 7:07 pm
Yes, it made my virtually non existent seizures (I had catamenial epilepsy) much worse. I wasn’t on any meds, but decided (stupidly) that the mirena would help control my epilepsy. I ended up with depression, anxiety attacks, and waking up in an ambulance on two separate occasions all in 3 weeks (unheard of since my teenage yrs). After the removal of my mirena, my depression lifted, my seizures have stopped, and I feel so much more alert. It’s the last time I use something hormonal…
June 28, 2013 at 4:02 am
I wanted to leave a comment regarding Mirena. Back in March 2008, a year after the birth of my 3rd child I chose Mirena as my form of birth control. Five years later, not a single complaint, fortunately from everything I have read. This past Monday I had my Mirena removed (it should have been removed in March & here it is the end of June) and replaced by a second Mirena. I believe it was late Wednesday, 3 days after having the removal and reinsertion, I have developed a constant pain in my lower left leg. This pain has a central point where it is the strongest which is on the outer side of my calf, maybe 2 inches below my knee; the pain extends down the outer side of my leg to my ankle, directly begin my ankle bone, extending as high up as my lower thigh, all the pain is on the outside of my leg.
I have been doing a lot of long road trips lately, taking my kids to my ex’s which is 5.5 hrs round trip, same day there in back, turn @ 2 days later, do the same thing when picking them up. I have also traveled to London, UK a little more than a month ago, 10+ hrs one way in a plane. I’m thinking I have a blood clot, but am scared to death! It’s 4am where I live now and have been worrying all night about this, debating whether I should wake up my fiancée to fill him in on all this. I will let him sleep a little longer, after all going to the ER is going to be exhausting and one of us should be well rested 🙂

Jen, we didn’t get an update from you. I hope this finds you. Please let us know what happened. I hope you did go to the hospital right away!
August 19, 2013 at 12:32 am
I also had no history of blood clots until I had the mirena removed. After 2 years, I decided to have it removed due to severe migraines, abdominal bloating, depression and fatigue. 5 days after removal I developed severe leg pain and swelling. Went immediately to doctor and he diagnosed me with superficial blood clots. He stated that the removal may have sent a surge of hormones and put me at risk. And I did not mention that I had to have surgery to remove it from my uterus. This IUD has been a nightmare since I got it and still giving me issues. This IUD needs to be taken off the market immediately. I strongly recommend to not consider this product by all means!!
September 27, 2013 at 9:22 pm
My daughter had mirena 5 years ago after the birth of her son. Last week had it replaced and 3 days ago was diagnosed with DVT, a blood clot in the leg. She has been in tremendous leg pain. I’ve been giving her blood thinner shots and starting tomorrow she will have to be on Coumadin for 6 months. She paid for this IUD out of her own pocket and now the hematologist she seen today recommended she have it removed. I’ve read many articles about how safe this form of birth control is but with what we’ve been through the past few days and after reading the above post feel this is extremely dangerous. What can be done?
September 28, 2013 at 9:31 am
The oddest thing is that doctors see us with blood clots but keep telling us the product does not indicate clots to be associated. Therefore they ignore our questioning that the two may be related. It is my hope that we keep posting our stories and that women who experience clots point their doctors to this post!! Let them see that just because they see you as a “one off” it doesn’t translate into you actually being a one off or that you’re wrong to think there might be an association. I am not saying the maker is purposely hiding or lying about this issue although we know drug makers have done this in the past. It’s possible that whatever studies they set didn’t find this problem, but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
Keep posting your stories!

My story sounds the same. I had have no family history of seizures at all. Mine started as small ones and spread into bigger grand mal seizures. Now I’m on epilepsy meds. On top of that is the anxiety, and my hair is falling out, insomnia, and I just feel like crap. I have been seeing a neurologist and he sent me to a heart dr, and a therapist. Finally I hope I have found the answer as to why I feel so sick these past 3 years!

I had the mirena in for 3 1/2 years formerly healthy active no long trips no family history of clotting disorders and developed mulitple pulminary blood clots. in both lungs. i feel mirena had something to do with the pe!

Thank you all! I have a history of a blood clot in my lung and told i have a clotting disorder and not to take hormonal birth control per my hematologist (10 yrs ago) i am now having issues with Haney bleeding with my copper iud and my gyn is suggesting mirena. I was leary but considering out because there is a penalty that my progesterone levels are low but my gut is.telling me not to do it, so so glad i found this. Will NOT BE GETTING THIS! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

I had my mirena fitted March 27th, the same week I took a 4 hour flight. 2 days after the mirena was inserted my right leg began to feel strange, warm on the inside…but no other symptoms. 2 days later I was coughing up blood and in the emergency room.
All the tests (ultrasound, X-ray, ct scan) came back negative but a blood test showed the presence of a chemical the body creates whena clot is present.
My Gp says I had a dvt and PE….due to the flight. Here I am 7 days down the track, still warm sensation in my leg, no medication given and as worried as hell. I think I need to re visit my GP and discuss this further…..I may yet get this thing removed!

Hello everyone Im 30 years old.
I just had an IUD inserted this past monday…today is the third day with it and Im experiencing a lot of pain ( cramp like). The pain is stronger on my right side and is shooting down my leg. Im starting to get very nervous. I need the Mirena IUD due to PCOS issues, my OB said Mirena will help me from getting
Cancer in the uterus due to pcos In the future. I havent had any periods for years… I have two children truly a miracle.
Im a smoker….I was wondering if smoking and having an IUD is dangerous? I read a few stories and Im really really scared!!! I’ll probably give it a couple of months and remove it Im extremely scared of all these birth control methods.

Just clarifying. I had multiple pulmonary embolisms, PEs with no previous history of blood clots and no cause found for these PEs. Some here are also discussing epilepsy and seizures. Please be sure to clarify if you are trying to connect seizures and epilepsy with the Mirena IUD or be sure to indicate you are trying to connect blood clots with the Mirena IUD.

Hi my name is celina, I’m 30. I had my iud (mirena) put in 5 years ago . I just took it out 3 months ago because they have found a massive clot in my right arm about 20 cm long. I have been on blood thinners (coumadin) for over a year and the clot is not dissolving. I keep getting bad head aches, dizziness and heart palpitations like panic attacks. I whent to see a blood specialist and i hafe to under go blood work next week. I asked her if the iud could be the cause but she said very unlikely. I am fearing tne worst (leukemia). God forbid, i have 2 kids. I am so scared. I regret putting that in me. I’m reading all of your stories and i can’t believe the doctors don’t do more study on thos thing.

I too was told it can’t be the Mireya UD. Six years later I am still on warfarin as without it my INR levels would surely be back to dangerous levels. I am thinking about having it removed soon as I am now over 50 and should be hitting menopause. I will keep everyone posted when I do take it out and I see what happens. May not be for another couple years. I kept it in because someone has to put themselves out there when med community can’t/won”t. Watch this space. I am always watching to hear from more women.
